"Theoretically, I should do it myself, but from a practical aspect... you could do it too."
—Prof. Dr. Salman Devi when presenting a quest.

Quests are assignments given by a Computer Player. You can choose if you want to do them. If you complete them satisfactorily, you are given a reward. If you refuse to complete the quest, the NPC will become angry but nothing else happens. However if you fail to complete the quest, the NPC will become angry and you will lose some influence with him/her.

By completing 1, 10, 100, 500 or 1000 quests you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement "Be Prepared!"

Normal Quests[]

There are many types of quests.

Delivery[]

Sometimes NPCs will ask you to bring a certain amount (of a combination) of goods to them. To complete the quest, just deliver the required goods to the NPC's warehouse or Ark before the time runs out. Many times NPC's will request a certain amount of goods soon after you start a production chain.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement "Did Someone Order Pizza?"

Escort[]

Occasionally you'll be asked to safely escort a ship or group of ships out of the region. Click on the ships at the harbor to begin the escort. Certain enemy ships will appear during the escort and try to destroy the ships. Be sure to send enough vehicles to escort the quest ships. Once the ship(s) has left the region safely, pick up the "proof" items and return them to the original quest giver. Tip: use EMP items for your advantage.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement "You Can Never Fall In Love"

Hunting[]

NPCs will occasionally ask you to sink a ship before it gets away. You simply have to destroy the ship then pick up the "proof" flotsam item and bring it back to the NPC to complete the quest.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Follow that Ship!"

Battle[]

Some NPCs will ask you to destroy certain ships that appear on the map. Unlike hunting, these ships appear in one location and stay there until you destroy them or time runs out for the quest. There may just be one ship or several ships that are helping guard the one main quest ship. You have to destroy the main ship, then pick up the "proof" flotsam item and bring it back to the NPC to complete the quest.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Mercenary"

Picture Puzzle[]

In this category, you have to find some people / vehicles in one of your cities.

Tip: These quests can be solved much easier by rotating and aligning the camera to a parallel view of your streets. Your targets can also spawn in other locations than the area your quest ticker highlights, so check your whole city.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"The All-Seeing Eye"

Recovery[]

In this category, you have to find some items in the sea (above-water).

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Raiders of the Lost Flotsam"

Underwater Recovery[]

In this category, you have to find some items underwater. Therefore you need to first pick up a searchlight for your submarine at the Quest sender's Warehouse or Ark. The searchlight is used as a normal item, and it disappears when you have completed the quest. The item worths 0 Licenses, but you can give it away after use.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Fiat Lux!"

Smuggler[]

In this category, you have to deliver an item to a ship without being seen by a scanner unit.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Contraband"

Race[]

In this category, you have to deliver an item faster than your opponent. Tip: use EMP to knock out the competitors.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Tortoise and Hare"

Exploration[]

In this category, you have to explorer a number of islands for the quest giver, by loading a certain amount of a specified good onto a ship and bringing it to the coast of the target islands. (There are two types of this quest. Only one of them counts for the achievement, where you have the possibility to fail on some of the islands.)

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Proclamations of John Frum"

Assistance[]

In this category, you have to deliver some goods to a vehicle. Some competing parties will make offers for the player, where you have to deliver the same goods to their ship.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Roadside Assistance"

Looting Expedition[]

In this category, you have to hijack a ship. The target ship will not appear until you collect the boarding party from the Quest sender. In some quest chains may be given hijackers while using a T38 for a delivery because of it's speed advantage. You can simply meet your fleet at sea and transfer the hijackers to a ship.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Grand Theft Ship"

Convoy[]

Deep Ocean Expansion Required!
You require the Deep Ocean expansion to unlock this content.

In this category you'll first travel to the quest sender to get a tracking device. When you load the tracking device on board a ship that belongs to the quest-sender will follow you, and you'll have to escort it to different places on the map, in your own order. While you do this, enemy ships will attack the ship following you, so it's smart to have more than one ship.

By completing 10, 100 or 250 quests of this category, you are given an achievement:

  • Achievement"Now just don't get lost"

Quest Complications[]

While quests are usually quite simple to complete, sometimes the quests will have extra things to worry about.

Enemy ships[]

Sometimes during a quest (mostly during race and delivery quests) enemy ships will appear and target the ship carrying the items. Since these ships are entirely focused on their target you can use your other ships to destroy them safely.

Offers from other NPCs[]

"Listen to my counter-proposal before you start."
—Yana Rodriguez

When you get some quests that involve moving goods or items to a NPC, sometimes another NPC will offer to reward you if you deliver the needed goods/items to them instead of the original NPC. Depending on the type of quest, they may instead ask you to simply ignore the quest (letting the timer expire or canceling the quest). You then need to choose who you will help, but the NPC which you did not help will get a reduction in influence.

Quest chains[]

"So, that has been done… but the Board has another task for you."
—Rufus Thorne revealing the next part of a quest

Occasionally you will get a quest with a name ending with I such as "Headhunters I". This is the beginning of a quest chain, which is a number of quests linked together. Once you complete the first quest, you must complete the subsequent quests in the chain. You will only get the reward once you have completed the last quest (usually the third or fourth quest in the chain).

Quest Sources[]

While NPCs will give you quests from time to time there are two other main sources of quests.

Demanding Quests[]

You can demand quests from Rufus Thorne, Yana Rodriguez, Salman Devi and Hector (if you are at peace with him) at 30 influence. Demanding quests has a cooldown of 45 minutes.

Your workforce[]

"I'm not used to asking for help. This is an exception."
Egon presenting a quest

Occasionally your employees will give you quests, however instead of telling you normally you have to get the quest by looking for buildings with a blue arrow above them and selecting the building, which will allow you to access the quest.

Special Quests[]

There are three kinds of special quests.

Ultimatums[]

For the main article, see Ultimatums.

Ultimatums are conditions asked by another NPC to reach an agreement. There are three types of ultimatums. The first is the threat of rebellion from your own population if you don't fulfill their demands. The second is a threat of war from another NPC, eg. Hector who wants a certain amount of credits and otherwise he will declare war. The final type of ultimatums is a peace offer from the NPC you are at war with. You have a certain amount of time to fufill these requirements asked for by another individual. If you do not fulfill the stated requirements within the time limit, the player who gave you the ultimatum will carry out the stated threat.

Ultimatums often have a condition that needs to be fullfilled and then maintained for a certain period of time. If the quest timer expires but the condition is fullfilled, it will not be considered a failure unless the condition is broken before the quest objective timer is up.

Ultimatums can be largely avoided as long as you follow certain guidelines depending on the NPCs present and your own population. For instance, keeping a neutral or positive ecobalance will prevent your Eco population from protesting ecobalance, and not producing a lot of oil yourself will keep Sokow from issuing threats. Having a good standing with NPCs in general seems to make ultimatums a lot less likely.

Friendly Turns[]

"I must admit, sympathy and antipathy are two systems that I have not yet fully understood in all their complexity. Even their initialization often seems completely arbitrary to me. But what I really do not understand is why innocent people get involved in this type of social fabric. Is this friendship? At any rate, I have to put together some "thoughts" on the matter."
—E.V.E. (Data Log - Friendly Turns)

A Friendly Turn is a quest that has to do with other NPCs than only the quest sender and you. There are two types of Friendly Turns:

  • Request for Help
In this variant of the Friendly Turn you will be asked to do a favor for an individual who has a close relationship with the quest sender. If you complete this quest, you will increase your influence with the quest sender, and sometimes even with both individuals.
Example: Tilda Jorgensen asks you to increase your influence with Hiro Ebashi by ten points.
  • Obstructing Enemies
A Friendly Turn may also involve in conflicts that do not really concern you. The quest sender will demand a sign of your solidarity, and asks you to take action to one of his rivals. Complying with the request will improve your influence with the quest sender. Naturally, your status with the rival concerned will deteriorate accordingly.
Example: Rufus Thorne asks you to cease trading at Yana Rodriguez' Ark and vice versa.

Friendly Turns will often reward 40 Influence Points with the quest sender and no further rewards.

Motivation[]

Sometimes the Faction Representatives will give you a Motivation quest based on their faction (provided you have access to that faction). Unlike most quests, Motivation quests have no time limit and are meant to motivate (hence the name) players to reach certain goals, such as settling Executives, having a positive balance or building a momument. These objectives seem to be given mostly if the development of the related faction is stagnant for a while (for example, if you have enough Eco Engineers to unlock all their needs but lack something to continue to Executives for a while you will probably recieve a quest to do so from Yana).

Current Events[]

Every day players can deal with an event to get Career Points with a faction of their choice. Once a player chooses which faction they wish to support, they then get a quest (usually one of the following: deliver materials to the Ark, deliver materials to a ship or recover items/people from the ocean) in all continuous games and single missions. Completion of this quest (which is the same for all 3 factions) gives the player 50 Career Points with the faction that was chosen.

Rewards[]

"In accordance with Section 38 of the International Employment law the succesful completion of a Quest must be rewarded appropiately."
—Data Log (Quests)

The following rewards are common for normal quests:

Computer Players will often give more rewards for one quest, usually some credits, some licenses and some influence points.

Ultimatums are the only quest which are not rewarded. Friendly Turns are only rewarded with many influence points.
