A type of fertility that exists on undersea islands is a black smoker. Holding the mouse over the black smoker icon in the fertilities bar of the user interface will show a countdown timer showing how much time will pass before the smoker will cease activity and become a metal deposit (but only after researchers have been settled in the sector). A black smoker in an undersea island may last up to 10 hours. If the black smoker finishes its countdown, it will become a random metal deposit. This metal deposit can then be mined by building the Metal Converter anywhere on the plateau. However, if you have the Deep Ocean Expansion, you can only build the metal converter near a black smoker. The advantage of this is that you are able to mine all resources at once, and you don't have to wait for the Smoker to end activity or use Black Smoker items.

The Maintenance Cost of the Metal Converter varies depending on the material:

  • Iron: Balance-icon -100
  • Copper: Balance-icon -100
  • Gold: Balance-icon -150
  • Uranium: Balance-icon -200
  • Platinum: Balance-icon -80 (requires the Deep Ocean expansion)

The Energy Cost remains the same, except for the Platinum Metal converter.

It is worth noting that Metal Converters are also more effective than their island counterparts; except for the copper mine and gold refinery, every converter does the job of 1.50 to 2 mines.

The reasons for choosing each fertility depend on your goals in the game:

  • Iron Ore is needed in large quantities to produce an enormous number of goods, as processed Iron can be made into many things: Tools to build, Weapons for ships, Steel and Heavy Weapons for Tycoons, and High-Tech weapons for Techs. It is also used for many Laboratory and Academy items. The converter produces at 150% the rate of a mine, which means 4 converters need to be paired with 3 coal mines (or 6 excavators) to process Iron. All factions can benefit from powerful, centralized iron production, though Tycoons will likely benefit the most. A well rounded choice.
  • Copper is required to maintain Eco Lifestyle from Tier 2 on, and is produced at the same rate as a mine. A plateau with this fertility can save half a dozen mine slots or more as Eco population grows. Techs also need copper as it is used in certain Laboratory and Academy construction items, but generally not enough to justify dedicated Converters.
  • Gold Converters free up river slots from the Tycoons, which Eco residents desperately need for Lifestyle and Pasta production. They can also produce a tidy profit when selling Jewelry to Rufus Thorne. It produces at same rate of a refinery. Important for hybrid, late game empires.
  • Uranium Converters are the most effective, working at 200% the speed of normal uranium mines. Missile Launch Pads have a huge demand for Uranium and are difficult to supply without the aid of converters. They can also turn a massive profit by making fuel rods to sell to Trenchcoat. Large scale nuclear power becomes possible, though this can become disastrous without adequate precautions.

In addition, its possible to purchase very powerful upgrades for the Metal Converters in the Deep Ocean Expansion, which reduce the maintenance costs, as well as decreasing the power requirement and increasing the production speed, Metal Converters are made even more favorable to use compared to their island counterparts.

The Deep Ocean expansion changes the basic functions of black smokers and metal converters, making them function as described below;

Black smokers don't cease activity, and can provide any mineral stated above along the new mineral, Platinum. To balance this, metal converters are now bigger (6x5 tiles, as opposed to 4x3 tiles) and must be placed within range of a black smoker to work. Undersea islands with black smokers have at least 2 black smoker spots.

  • Platinum can only be obtained by using Metal Converters, and is used for the Bionic Suits and the Laboratory Instruments production chains, so it is a very important metal for the Techs.
  • Each type of metal converter emits a different light color corresponding to the converted mineral.

UpgradesEdit

There are now some Warehouse Items that increase Productivity or decrease maintenance or energy costs of Metal Converters that can be bought. Note that these Items only affect one type of Metal Converter.
