I've made some progress on extracting academy research project details: python code, resulting JSON. --Grilse 03:07, December 19, 2011 (UTC)

Oooooh, looking good. That example on your User page also seems to have brought to light some issues with the template itself. Bah. (Edit: Added Template:Research-header.) --Cphoenix (talk) 03:25, December 19, 2011 (UTC)

Does that mean that Template:Research in its current state was intended for use? It looks more like a stub. --Grilse 03:35, December 19, 2011 (UTC)

Yes, actually. It's intend to be used as a series of calls, not one template. Start the table with {{Research-header}}. Then the the table itself is constructed with a series of {{Research}} calls. End the table with |} after the last call.
We've had success over on the SotS and SotS 2 wikis with this method for long lists of items in a table. It allows us to make easy changes globally to the tables because they're constructed piecemeal with templates. --Cphoenix (talk) 03:41, December 19, 2011 (UTC)

I've made considerable progress and published the first chunk of generated template calls. I'm pleased with the result thus far, but I also think there is still room for improvement.

  • Many aspect are not yet included. Most notably the required parts and the affected unit/building.
  • The templates do so little that using them feels rather moot. I'd say we either move as much logic as possible from the python code into the templates, or ditch the templates and move all logic to the python code.
  • Layout could probably be improved.

Any good ideas will be appreciated. --Grilse 22:41, December 20, 2011 (UTC)

I know the templates seem...annoying, but I'm rather attached to them, simply because they'll make any layout changes easier in future. 'Tis the difference between someone wading through a long page full of wiki-markup, or making a small change to the template. Future-proofing, for future-proofing's sake. As for the incompleteness...jeeze Grilse, just add the stuff to the template. :-p I'll be back on the 4th so expect me to be around more regularly to tweak things. --Cphoenix (talk) 20:13, January 2, 2012 (UTC)
