The Copper Mine mines Copper. Copper is a relatively common material used for the Microchip production and some modules in the Laboratory. Like Iron, it can only be harvested from mountainside deposits or an underwater black Smoker that has ceased activity. Various technologies are available to extend the quantity that can be harvested from an island. It's possible to replace this building for a electronics recycler in the expansion, which doesn't require any copper or sand.
One Copper mine operating at 100% can produce enough ore to sustain two Chip Factories, with the assistance of a Sand Extractor. Three Copper Mines and two Sand Extractors can operate six Chip Factories with no waste, if the nodes are available.
