To generate power the plant requires coal which is mined with a Rotary Excavator or Coal Mine. Each coal power plant consumes the entire output of one Rotary Excavator or half of the output of a Coal Mine. Coal power plants output more energy than a Wind Park but are significantly more detrimental to the environment and cost more in the long term.
The Coal Power Plant is the easiest way for a Tycoon player to get power in the start of the game and has low up-front costs for the amount of power produced. It also has some extremely powerful upgrades available which can greatly improve its efficiency and reduce ecobalance impact. Four of the items combined will make your coal plants produce 114 power at 0 ecobalance, rivalling the Nuclear Power Plant, but consuming a large amount of coal. In the Deep Ocean Expansion this should no longer be a problem, as its now possible to research upgrades which adds 180000tons of coal to an island's raw materials, which makes it much easier to produce coal on a large scale.
- Due to its low price and relatively effective power production as well as its negative influence on the eco balance, the Coal Power Station, along with its Rotary Excavator, are the most common buildings to be claimed as the "Worst Environmental Pollution" in the Player Statistics.
There is one Warehouse Item that affects the Coal Power Station specifically and must be bought/found.
